Magazine Cover Remake (Sherlock)

Original.

The masthead - Total Film, is the biggest font on the page to catch people's attention and it suggests that the company is very important and influential.

White capital letters, in sans serif font, contrast against the variations of blue in the background. The magazine is popular enough to have the masthead is obscured by the main image. The magazine brand has a big fan base and fans will already know what to look for. The word film is included in the title so the reader will know what genre of magazine this is.

The main colour scheme of the magazine cover is blue to match the mysterious mood of the film that is featured. Blue also has cool connotations which links to the main character, Sherlock, as he is quite a calm and sophisticated character. The dark colours in the background add context to the image. The cover lines are written in a thin blue font that matches the rest of the cover. This style helps the overall visual look smooth and smart. The colours will mostly appeal to a younger audience as they are attracted to bright colours. The misty effect that is used for the background creates a mysterious atmosphere which states the genre of a crime thriller.
The biggest focus on the page is the main character from the feature film, Sherlock Holmes. The image of the main character is a posed, mid shot which is the largest image on the page. This tells the audience who the focus of the magazine is without reading the titles. The character is posing, looking directly towards the audience which engages us and feels like direct communication.
The iconography of a smart coat and tie connotes that he is an upper-class man who is wealthy and very sophisticated. This representation connotes that this man is very clever. He wears dark clothes that create a mysterious mood that links to the spy and detective genre.

Sherlock is played by Robert Downey Jr. who is well known for playing iron man in Marvel films, this will attract audiences who know him from the action genre. The main cinema demographic for this magazine is 15- 28. I think this because the feature film has a BBFC certificate of 12 but stereotypically, children younger than 15 are less likely to want to read.

Images of characters from Fantastic Mr Fox, Alice in Wonderland and Ironman are found on the top of the right side of the page. These pugs are placed at the top of the page as that is where the reader will look first and they should catch their attention. Readers will instantly know what is going to be discussed by the stills that are shown.
Pugs are used at the top of the page where an image from the inside of the magazine is shown to tell the audience what can be expected. This catches a reader’s eye as it is at the top and promises more information than you can find anywhere else.
The barcode and publication company are small in the corner so that they don't take attention away from the main image.
The strapline is the main feature film in blue and white capitals. This colour and font reinforce the genre of the film as they are smooth and cool.
Exclamation marks are used in the cover lines to excite the audience and exaggerate the contents.

The USP of this magazine is that the audience is promised to be told the top ten films being made and information and explanations of already made films that have fans. Gratifications are what makes magazines popular and unique.
Attention is gained by the popular and well know title as well as the star power used on the front cover and the serious mood.
Their website address can be found just below the title so readers can access more information. This is aimed at a younger, contemporary audience as they are more likely to use technology. The issue number, date of release and price is located below the left side of the masthead. This information is all in a small font as it isn't very important in relation to the rest of the page.
this cover is good as it effectively communicates to the audience the genre of film and what will be in the magazine. The colours that are used in the magazine are all very similar, this means the magazine might not stand out very well on a shelf of other bright film magazines.

Film Magazine Analysis (Shutter Island)

Film Magazine Analysis

The masthead - Total Film, is the biggest font on the page to catch people’s attention, state how important and influential the company is. White capital letters, in sans serif font, contrast against the background. The masthead is obscured by the main image. This magazine brand is very popular and fans will already know what to look for. The word film is included in the title so the reader will know what genre the magazine is.
The boldest colour of the magazine front cover is red which has connotations of blood and danger. It also suggests a warning and this conveys the genre of the film. Blue is used in the background for the main image. This creates a mysterious and dark mood, adding context to the image. The cover-lines are all backed by a red smudge which represents blood and reinforces the thriller genre. Colours appeal to a younger audience as they are bright and exciting.
The biggest focus of the page is the main character from 'Shutter Island'- the key selling point of this magazine. The image of the main character is a posed, mid shot which is the largest image on the page. This tells the audience who the focus of the magazine is without reading the titles.
The character is posing, looking directly towards the audience which engages us and feels like direct communication.

The iconography of a gun and dark, smart clothes, suggests the character is a killer. This representation of the character will appeal to a male audience as they want to be able to relate to a strong male. However, the main actor, Leonardo DiCaprio will attract a female audience. The main cinema demographic for this magazine is 15- 28. I think this because the feature film has a BBFC certificate of 15. The fonts used are sharp, bold and masculine to link in with the representation and context.
An image of a character from Avatar is found on the right side of the page. This is recognisable iconography and readers will instantly know what is going to be discussed.
The barcode and publication company are small in the corner, this is so that they don't take attention away from the main image.
The strapline is the main feature film in red capitals. This colour and font reinforce the genre of the film.

Exclamation marks are used in the cover lines to excite the audience and exaggerate about the continence.
Pugs are used at the top of the page where an image from the inside of the magazine is shown to tell the audience what can be expected. This catches a reader’s eye as it is at the top and promises more information than you can find anywhere else.

The USP of this magazine is that the audience is promised an insight into filmmakers sketchbooks and reviews on more than three different films. Gratifications are what makes magazines popular and unique.
Attention is gained by the popular and well know title as well as the star power used on the front cover and the serious mood.

Their website address can be found just above the title so readers can access more information. This is aimed at a younger, contemporary audience as they are more likely to use technology. The issue number and date of release is located above the website and masthead. This information is all in a small font as it isn't very important in relation to the rest of the page.

this cover is good as it effectively communicates to the audience the genre of film and what will be in the magazine. The cover isn't full up or busy with writing which could possibly push readers towards a different film magazine which promises more information inside.

Film Poster Remake (Love Letter)

Original

The title - Love Letter, is the biggest font on the poster so the audience knows it's the title. The title is written in red which has connotations of love and romance. This suggests to the audience that the film will be a romantic film.

Red capital letters, in Trajan font, contrast against the pale tropical background. The text has been edited so that it has a drop shadow and highlights. This makes the text stand out even more against a pale background.

The main colour scheme of the poster is red and white which is a common colour scheme for the rom-com or romance genre. Pale colours connote a light-hearted mood under the red passion. These colours are used to match the mood of the film. Red also has connotations of danger which could be a subtle hint to what the film is about.

An image of a tropical island I used in the background which suggests the setting of the film. The main characters in the film are cut out and placed over the top of the background. The female character isn't posing, unlike the man who is looking at the audience. This suggests the male is the lead character and more famous.

A tagline can be found under the title which gives the audience some insight into what the film will include.

A review from a film magazine has been used for the poster to tell the audience how good it is and if it is worth watching.

Star power is used to gain an audience. The names of the main characters are written underneath their images in the same font as the title.
